Below is a map of how all of the FHIR resources relate to each other (click on the image to enlarge).

The Composition is the hub for a majority of resources and contains reference to a large amount of the other clinical and administrative information available on a patient. An arrow pointing from one resource to another (e.g. MedicationStatement —> Medication) indicates that, for example, a MedicationStatement will oftentimes contain a reference to an affiliated Medication resource.

How to Use

As you are exploring the resources we have available and how they relate to your use cases, use this map to identify how one resource relates to another. For example, if you’re interested in the context of a condition, you may pull patient Encounter resources that contain Condition resources (a.k.a. a problem or diagnosis) and Location resources with details on where the encounter occurred.
